Mac mini M6 in India from ₹99,900: which memory size makes sense for local AI
Apple's new Mac mini starts at ₹99,900 with the M6 and ₹2,09,900 with the M5 Pro. Here is what the memory limits mean for running models at home.

Apple has brought its refreshed Mac mini to India with two chip choices, the M6 and the M5 Pro, and pitches both squarely at local AI work. The price gap between them is more than a lakh of rupees, so the real question for an Indian buyer is how much memory a home model actually needs.
Apple's refreshed Mac mini landed in India with pre-orders opening on 25 August and retail availability from 22 September, according to FoneArena's launch report. The headline for anyone who runs language models at home is that Apple is now talking about local AI as a main selling point, not a side note, and has tied the new chips to LM Studio benchmarks in its own marketing. Those numbers are Apple's claims and the launch coverage carries no independent testing, so treat them as a direction rather than a promise.
The entry machine is the Mac mini M6: a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD, priced at ₹99,900 in India against $899 in the US. Apple says each GPU core now carries its own neural accelerator and that AI operations run up to 4x faster than on the M4 version. For local models it claims up to 4.8x faster prompt processing in LM Studio than the M4 and up to 13.5x faster than the M1. Memory bandwidth is 170GB/s, and the memory can be configured up to 32GB when you order.
The step up is the Mac mini M5 Pro at ₹2,09,900, with a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. A faster 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU version is listed at ₹2,33,900. Memory can go up to 64GB with 307GB/s of bandwidth, and Apple claims up to 4x faster LLM prompt execution than the M4 Pro. It also has three Thunderbolt 5 ports, which Apple says lets you cluster several minis to run larger models. The M6 gets Thunderbolt 4 instead.
Memory is the number to watch. It is unified and chosen at purchase, so the configuration you pay for on day one is the ceiling for every model you will load. The base 16GB is comfortable for small models of roughly 7B to 8B parameters at 4-bit quantisation, plus speech and light image tasks. The 24GB M5 Pro suits models around 14B with room left for context. Anything bigger needs the 64GB option, so check the final configured price on Apple's India store before you commit.
Who should buy which? A student or freelancer who wants a quiet, small desktop for Ollama, transcription and coding assistants will be well served by the M6, ideally with more than the base memory if the budget stretches. Someone who plans to run bigger models, or to chain two machines, should look at the M5 Pro and spend on memory rather than storage, since external drives are cheap and memory is not. If you only need a chatbot, a paid subscription costs far less than ₹99,900, and a Mac mini only pays off when privacy, offline use or heavy daily usage matter.
The machine ships with macOS 27 and upgraded Apple Intelligence and Siri features. The source does not say which languages those features support at launch, so check that before counting on them.
