Is an RTX 5060 laptop enough for local AI? Why VRAM decides which gaming laptop to buy
RTX 5060 and 5070 laptops have 8GB of video memory. Here is what that runs, and when to pay for more.
Published 24 Oct 2026
You are looking at gaming laptops for running AI models and the cheaper RTX 5060 or 5070 ones look tempting. One number should decide it: how much video memory the graphics chip has.
A gaming laptop looks like the obvious machine for local AI: it has an NVIDIA graphics chip, plenty of power, and it travels. But the names mislead. A newer, bigger-sounding graphics chip does not mean more room for models. What matters is video memory, and on laptops it jumps in steps. Popular AI's April 2026 guide to laptops for local models gives the tiers: RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 laptops have 8GB, the RTX 5070 Ti has 12GB, and the RTX 5080 has 16GB.
Is an RTX 5060 laptop enough?
For small models, yes. Eight gigabytes of video memory suits smaller models, private document chat and light coding help, and it is a fine way to learn. It stops there. When a model does not fit, no amount of system memory fixes it, and a model that spills over runs far slower. The ASUS TUF Gaming F16 with an RTX 5060 is that kind of machine, and note that this listing has 16GB of system RAM, half of the 32GB the guide's own picks carry.
Is the RTX 5070 worth the extra over a 5060?
Not for AI. It still has 8GB, so you pay for gaming speed without more room for models. The ROG Zephyrus G14 with an RTX 5070 is a capable laptop, but buy it for that, not for bigger models. The guide's advice is blunt: buy a newer graphics name only if it moves you up a memory tier.
What does the step up buy?
The next tiers are where AI work gets comfortable. The RTX 5070 Ti at 12GB, as in the ROG Zephyrus G16 with an RTX 5070 Ti, gives room for larger quantized models and heavier document work, and the guide calls the 12GB tier the usual long-term pick over 8GB if the price gap is manageable. At the top, the ASUS ProArt P16 with an RTX 5090 and 24GB is built for the largest models a laptop can hold.
What about a MacBook?
A Mac shares one pool of memory, so a MacBook Pro with 24GB or 48GB can run models a similar Windows laptop cannot. The trade is no CUDA and fewer gaming options, but it is quiet, light and lasts far longer on battery. About 70 to 75 percent of a Mac's memory is usable by a model.
How much memory does a model need?
Roughly the number of billions of parameters times the bits per weight, divided by eight, plus about 10 percent and room for a long conversation. A small 8B model compressed to 4 bits needs under 6GB in total, which is why 8GB laptops can run it. Anything near 14B or larger is where they run out of road.
Which should you choose?
- Learning and small models on a budget: an RTX 5060 laptop, but expect to outgrow it.
- Serious local AI on Windows: aim for the 12GB tier or higher, and 32GB of system RAM.
- The largest models you can carry: an RTX 5090 laptop, or a Mac with big memory.
