Claude now bills in rupees: Pro at ₹1,999 a month, and what to learn before paying

Anthropic has started charging Indian users for Claude in rupees instead of dollars. If you were holding off because of card conversion fees or an unclear dollar bill, the numbers are now fixed, and they sit right next to ChatGPT and Google.
For a long time, paying for Claude from India meant an international card and a dollar charge that moved with the exchange rate. According to Analytics India Magazine, Anthropic has now introduced India-specific pricing, so subscribers can pay in rupees. The rollout is happening in phases across the web app and the mobile apps, so you may not see the rupee price on your account on the same day as a friend.
The prices in the report are simple to remember. Claude Pro is ₹1,999 a month. Claude Max comes in two tiers, ₹11,999 a month for the 5x usage tier and ₹23,999 a month for the 20x tier. Claude Team starts at ₹2,399 per seat each month, with a minimum of five users. The article does not say how GST is treated or which payment methods are accepted, including whether UPI works, so check the checkout screen before you assume anything. Other trackers quote slightly different figures for the same plans, which is a good reason to trust only what your own account page shows.
The comparison the article draws is the useful part for a buyer. ChatGPT Plus is cited at about ₹1,999 a month, and Google AI Pro, which bundles Gemini, at ₹1,950. So at the entry paid tier the three big assistants now cost almost the same in India, and the decision comes down to what you actually do with them rather than the price. The report also notes that India accounts for 5.8 percent of global Claude.ai consumer usage, which Anthropic's own India Economic Index puts it at, and calls India the company's largest market outside the US.
Who should pay? A student or freelancer who uses an assistant for a few prompts a week will not get ₹1,999 of value out of Pro, and a free tier is the sensible place to start. The plan makes more sense if you write, research or code every day and keep hitting limits. The Max tiers at ₹11,999 and ₹23,999 are really for people whose income depends on heavy daily use, such as developers running long coding sessions, and even then the 5x tier should come first.
If coding is your reason, there is a cheap way to find out whether it suits you before spending anything. Claude Code: A Highly Agentic Coding Assistant is a two-hour course built by DeepLearning.AI with Anthropic, and it is listed on Startbook as free during the platform beta, with the certificate needing a paid membership. It covers using Claude Code to explore, test, refactor and debug a codebase, and expects some Python and Git. Finish it first, then decide whether a rupee subscription earns its place in your monthly budget.
